Best Time to Visit

Exploring the Char Dham sites should happen between April and June and again from September to early November. At this time, the weather is mild, the temples are open and it's easy to drive along the roads. The monsoon months (July–August) should be avoided because they bring heavy rains and a risk of landslides. With fewer clouds and less people, there is plenty of opportunity for a restful pilgrimage after the rains.

Note: Make sure to see the opening dates of temples prior to your trip.

Spiritual Significance of These Himalayan Shrines

Every Dham of this divine circuit stands for a religious concept and honors an important deity.

  • Yamunotri- Goddess Yamuna is honored at Yamunotri and this shrine represents purity as the starting place of the Yamuna River. People on pilgrimage bathe in the hot springs to clean their hearts.
  • Gangotri - Dedicated to Goddess Ganga, it is where the holy Ganges begins its journey and is thought to wrest every sin.
  • Kedarnath - It is a sacred 12th Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva, meaning divine power and achieving freedom by practicing penance.
  • Badrinath- This holy shrine is dedicated to Lord Vishnu where pilgrims from different corners of the world flock to attain salvation and spiritual understanding.

Accommodation Options

There are plenty of accommodation choices during your pilgrimage. Select the one that fits your needs and offer you a peaceful atmosphere.

  • Haridwar- The city hosts a variety of hotels, ashrams and guest houses.
  • Dehradun- Being a great transit point, Dehradun has plenty of high-end hotels and economical options.
  • Yamunotri- One can find simple but very special accommodation like Dharamshalas, guesthouses and ashrams set amid the peaceful Himalayas.
  • Gangotri- A small number of guesthouses and lodges are around; it is most convenient to stay near the temple for a meaningful experience.
  • Kedarnath- You can arrange your stay in basic lodges, camps or rest houses.
  • Badrinath- One can find reasonably priced hotels and shelter camps all within easy walking distance of the shrine.
